FAQ's
Fully Housed Frame
This means the frame is constructed using a Mortise and Tenon joint. A mortise and tenon joint consists, in simple terms, of a 'tongue', (the tenon) that slots into a hole or groove (the mortise) cut in the mating piece of timber. The strength of the joint makes it ideal for use in framing and general furniture work. For a really strong joint the tenon must be a tight fit into the mortise, so care must be taken when cutting both parts of the joint. For maximum strength, the tenon width should never be more than one third the width of the timber in which it is cut.
Kiln dried furniture grade timber
Hand selected from available supplies. We use Kiln dried timber because of its quality and ageing properties. When we build a table we want it to stay straight and look its best for generation.

Hand ground
Our tables have all had the slate hand ground for supreme flatness and accurate roll.
Brushing the table
It is recommended to regularly brush tables whenever play is finished to remove excess chalk & dust. Using a good quality horsehair or Billiards brush and with short firm strokes start at the 'D' end or Baulk (so as to be in the direction of the 'nap' ) Brush down the table in one straight line with the next 'run' to slightly overlap the previous. Remember to brush under and around the top of the cushions in the direction of the nap. Harry Evans & Sons include cloth brushing as part of a general table service if required. Nap- the direction the fibres lay flat and can be felt by gently stroking the cloth
Dustcovers
Are highly recommended to prolong the life of your Billiard cloth .Strong light and dust can fade & break down the wool fibres. Dustcovers can be made of cotton, linen or some other breathable fabric which can be complimentary to décor as well. Where pets or children frequent a water-proof cover may be advisable. Large selections of dustcover styles are available.
Leveling your table
Following re-location or due to climatic changes billiards tables may need leveling. This is provided in a general service by Harry Evans & Sons and is done by means of 'adjusting' toes at the base of the table legs.
Re-marking & Re-spotting
Involves the re-drawing of the 'D' and baulk line onto the billiard cloth using special marking out tools and replacing the silk glue on spots under the coloured ball positions. As there are quite strict dimensions as to where these are positioned for the various size tables it is therefore recommended to seek the expertise of billiards technicians.
Ironing the cloth
The purpose of ironing cloth is to lay the 'nap' flat so as to increase the speed of the balls in play. This is done on 'wool setting' or using medium dry heat with a billiard iron. Hold iron at 45deg.angle to reduce heat marks. Care must be taken to keep the iron moving at all times. If unsure seek specialist advice.
Billiard cloth
Sometimes wrongly referred to as 'felt' which is a matted compressed material, billiard cloth in comparison is a carefully constructed purpose-made woven cloth for use in the various cloth sports (Snooker, Billiards , Pool and Eight ball , Nine ball games.) Generally it is made of 100% wool and is available in different weights for the different applications. There are also a selection of colours and patterns ranging from the traditional to more modern designs and clours.
Re-tipping cues and Brass ferrules
With regular use tips on cues become worn or drop off and ferrules may split. Harry Evans & Sons provides a re-tipping service where a new high quality leather tip is applied and /or ferrule replaced. They can also give helpful hints on good tip maintenance.
